You know, I was going to post that one on here.  I have that in my You Tube favorites, and it's one of the best examples of MIDI guitar I've seen yet.  I keep watching it over again for inspiration. What Al Ayoub is doing is very similar to the kind of compositional ideas I'm playing with my Roland GI-10 to computer.  I even have a lot of the same vsts, and phrase "piano" parts much the same.  Very refreshing to see this!

My reservation about the String Port is this:  doesn't that take away alot of cpu resources from your DAW environment to use?  I'm already pushing my i7 machine almost to the limit with some Cubase projects, and God forbid - that's all I need is to introduce some more mysterious interrupts.  ???

Also, (when the Windows control software comes out) wouldn't it be really clutsy to have to open all that stuff separate from your DAW every you want to grab your guitar and sequence something?  Not trying to be too picky here, but those are the first things that come to mind.

Hi everyone!

I'm new here. I'm also not a guitarist, but a violinist! I just recently acquired a divided pickup electric violin with a DIN-13 out, and am interested in also getting the StringPort:

I'm on a tight budget, and don't have $1000 to cough up for something like this. I was thinking that this would be the right place to look for people who purchased it a while back, but no longer use it. Anybody out there?

Thanks!
Julien

That's a new one on me and looks interesting but not exactly cheap is it?

Interesting read on the KMI Stringport secret features - they have future hardware support for on board guitar mounted CPU and Bi-directional data interface:

Re: [midiguitar] Re: Stringport

We have added a high speed bi-directional data path riding on the (GK-3A 13 pin)  interface Up/Down [S1/S2]
buttons data lines . The unused pin #9 is used as a digital ground for the return path for
digital circuitry. Also the power supplies to the guitar are beefed up (about 5
watts). The plan is to support CPUs in the guitar.( via 13 pin interface )

That fits in nicely with what Keith has been casually mentioning for years: The desire to put processing in the instrument....

I'm probably late to the party in knowing this, but I checked in on it recently. http://www.keithmcmillen.com/stringport/overview
Never bought it because I was waiting for the Windows version.
Too bad, looked really promising.

I'm sure Elantric will point me to the topic covering this from like, two years ago or something...  ::)

Stringport has been discontinued since 2011 - basically it boiled down to sluggish software that required a MacPro to run smoothly - and The Guitar to MIDI on the GR-55 was a bit faster than Stringport (since superceeded by FTP)   - and these combined facts killed the KMI Stringport.

FWIW - The KMI Stringport was discontinued in 2011
