In the GR55 patch exchange forum I found files ending with .g5l and .mid  I've uploaded a few of the .g5l patches and librarian works fine so far.

Can someone tell me or give me a link to information on the different file types that work when importing patches into my gr55?  What is the difference and do I need to convert them.  I'm totally clueless on this subject but have a solid background in computers (PC not MAC).

I use a PC with windows 7

Laptop windows 10
GR55
Tascam US1800
Ibanez with GK3 pickup and M-Audio Keystation

If you are seeing =.mid files - you probably were not in the GR55 Patch exchange area.

We support sharing user patches for many processors - the *.mid files are actually SMF format files used by Roland VG-99, and VB-99.
If you see a *.mid file in the GR-55 Patch exchange area - let me know.

GR-55 uses Roland GR-55 Librarian  *.g5l file format files for user patch exchange. These can be opened in either Roland GR-55 Librarian app or Gumtown's GR-55 Editor

And suggest use advanced search on patch file formats

and read the most important thread for GR-55 on this whole site (which covers all this)

The 3 file formats used with the GR-55FloorBoard editor

*.mid - used both by the editor and librarian - file can be integated into a sequencer track.
*.syx - used only by the editor as a GR-55 raw/native system exclusive data format.
*.g5l - used by both editor and librarian as a common file exchange patch format - use this format to share patches.
If the patch files you have won't open with the editor, then the files are not for the GR-55..
Patch files are uniquely specific for one type of unit/device, only GR-55 patch files work with the GR-55, and with nothing else.

I found a posting that mentioned that if I downloaded a patch and just the patch name changed but not the sound, it might be a driver issue??  I did have my Tascam US1800 USB interface hooked up to the laptop at the same time as having the GR55 USB hooked up.   That sounds like more feasible than a driver issue.  I'll try it again tonight and see if I get better results with a fresh boot and only the GR55 USB hooked up.

Its more likely an MS Internet Explorer issue ( I suggest ditch it!!)

Typically some browsers see a file with a *.mid extension, and try to throw it in your Library User Music Folder - since most Browsers are dumb and assume all mid files are MIDI Music files.

Our SMF VG-99 Patches are NOT MIDI Music Files  - but patch files.

So be sure when you try to download anything here - "right click" to enable "save as" and verify the patch file has the same name you see presented here on VGuitarforums.  Save the file to a separate dedicated folder on your hard drive you have created for storing patches. Avoid placing these in your OS's Music Folder. This is true for Mac OSX or Windows PC's.

My suspicion was correct.  When I booted up and just ran one of the two USB interfaces (just the GR55 without the Tascam) The patches came over clean.  I use Chrome not IE so the browser worked fine.  Just double click the file and it saves to my hard drive default in Google chrome and then double click the downloaded tab  and Librarian picks it up for me to copy it.

Is possible to hear the .g5l in a PC before the installation?  or how can I choose a patch?  thanks

Not possible  - you need the appropriate Roland / Boss hardware unit the patch was intended for

in the case of the *.G5L patch - that would be a GR-55 patch and most of us use Gumtown's GR-55 Floorboard Editor  /Librarian
https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=2951.0

to load  / save these in our Roland GR-55 Guitar Synth units.
