QuoteHello VGuitarists,

Our purchases are linked to environmental degradation, air pollution, water pollution, soil pollution, climate change, deforestation, acceleration of animal and plant extinctions, ewaste dumping, etc. and I question consumerism as a social and economic ideology.

Exactly what courses of action make sense going forward is an open question, however I submit that the present conditions place Mankind's future at needless risk for questionable reward.

Ignoring the hardware requirements, I suppose software downloads are relatively benign.

Consider an organized local Earth Day Celebration with eco  / green living demonstrations, and expanding the curriculum

There is more to life than just guitar. In recent months Ive been involved with non musical pursuits, like working with my girlfriend saving and protecting migratory birds in my part of the world and having my footage shown on local film festival.

And through clever gear acquisitions and sales Ive raised thousands of dollars to support acquisition of new instruments for my local "Guitars Not Guns" program for at risk teens.

Several folks do seem to get upset about all the Deal Alerts we post here, maybe its time to take a break from vguitarforums and go play acoustic guitar in the park

but remember one mans "superfluous music toys" and  / or costly IOS Music creation Apps  are another mans "tools for earning a living and change the world"  - and I've found there is no substitute for hands on experience, which allows me to determine the best tools for the situation, aid my "day gig"" career as a pro audio design engineer, and co-create and maintain this forum in an attempt to get high tech guitar knowledge documented and shared , hopefully empower others in their personal pursuit of harnessing the latest music tools employed in powerful non verbal communication through music, and lead by example.

I agree with CodeSmart, and would add that there's no 'requirement' to read the Deal Alerts Thread(s)...if that's not what one is interested in, for whatever reasons....    :-*

...at least that's how I understand it..
Read slower!!!   ....I'm typing as fast as I can...

ok, i'll bite. I clicked on you're link about ''several folks do seem to get upset about all the deal alert threads we post here'' and i didn't see any reference to people  being upset about the fact that you post deal alerts. What i did see was me talking about amazon sales tactics and question the ethics of that company as a business model for a sustainable future as far as building community is concerned (which btw you are clearly building community with your conservation and website efforts). I've since googled for more information on that company, and i came across 7 reasons not to buy products from amazon, one of which has to do with changing your product price when their computer detects that you have shown interest in that product, but did not purchase right away. That was my experience also. Shop where you want, i don't care, but at least reseach who you chose to do business with and consider whether or not your ethics align. There are no easy answers however, as we (all in the US) support tar sand oil extraction, whether we like it or not, simply because we consume products. Just because my home generates it's own electricity by using our one and only fusson reactor (the sun), does not mean that i am off the grid, but i can and do work for change.

Wikipedia gets $20 million a year for a site which is estimated to cost $2 million a year to operate. Wikipedia might enjoy getting money and fundraising in general but that does not mean that they actually need the money for anything useful. Also see http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/12/20/cash_rich_wikipedia_chugging/ and don't think anything has changed. You can find similar material elsewhere.

Some of your other choices are also pretty bad; i.e. Dawkins, and the environmentalist groups. Acknowledging that "nothing's perfect, non-profits have their issues" isn't enough; some of those organizations, particularly Greenpeace, are actually harmful and have an agenda the victims of which are the poor.

How one can support both Greenpeace and Richard Dawkins and "reason and science" is beyond me - environmentalism is a highly politically-oriented, anti-science, anti-technology ideology. There's a reason why Greenpeace's position is that anyone who supports them is a "hippie". (Not that I'm enamored of Richard Dawkins either - quite the  contrary. The average atheist seems to be narrow-minded and smug in a way and to a degree that the average theist can not even approach (with Dawkins himself leading the way) and often not much different than a religious fundamentalist. Why this needs to be encouraged is also beyond me.)

The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for well-intentioned people to donate money without thinking too much about where that money is going and what that money is doing.

Or, if I can quote the full statement which is not known to many people: "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing but then again 'doing nothing' is better than 'doing something' if the 'something' that is being done serves to strengthen the evil that one wouldn't want to triumph in the first place and, thereby, worsens the situation." - Edmund Burke
