Thanks Gumbo!

Feel free to send me more pics of roos lounging in sunlit hammocks while I shiver in the first snows of winter here in the glorious Midwest. Cheers!

Hmmm...  I'll work on that..

Ahhh Paul...
See how Peter lords over us in forecast bright?
While we merely rue the day bereft of joey?

"...no man's lord; I have no name, no title,
No, not that name was given me at the font,
But 'tis usurp'd: alack the heavy day!
That I have worn so many winters out,
And know not now what name to call myself.
O! that I were a mockery king of snow,
Standing before the sun of Adelaide,
To melt myself away in water-drops..."

Just a reminder that it's worth reading all of Vade's blog to obtain a swift dose of valuable knowledge

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=10117.0

Vade

If there's good information here it's mostly because I asked questions which were then answered knowledgably - with grace and style - by the kind folks who frequent this forum.

Some of the highlights of the blog for me are as follows.

1. The opening series of questions and answers culminating in reply #7 where mbenigni laid out the options so clearly that I finally got a handle on how to think about and plan for a build.

2. The diagram and plan I came up with at reply #11 was badly flawed but it served as a starting point. In the end, it's up to each of us to do the work required to come up with a decent rig and it's not fair to expect others to do that work for us or do a comprehensive review and analysis of the plan we've come up with.

3. Reply #75 and #76 cover some of the options regarding synth guitar builds. It was edited on 11-20-15 to reflect getting 13pin and FTP together internally; more on that below.

4. Reply #91 - #96 and #157 has information related to dealing with KMI and setting up the KMI SoftStep 2 midi controller.

5. Build details and rational for my current rig #102 - #106 and a YouTube demo at #113.

6. # 168, #174, #176 and https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=15974.0 deal with installing 13 pin and Fishman Triple Play (FTP) into one guitar - internally. There are many pictures and it's a record of a work in progress; that can make it seem more complicated than it is. The bottom line is that when using a Fender FTP Stratocaster as a guitar to mod you can run a simple 8 wire jumper from the built in FTP to a Roland GK3 internal kit you buy and install. Fender's built in hex pick-up will feed both the FTP and the GK3. That's the essence of the mod and that's pretty simple. Everything else is about how you want to place the GK3 and set up the controls for the GK3; you'd have to figure that out for any guitar where you wanted to install an internal GK3. If you do decide to go this route I'd highly recommend Gumbo as a source for the 8 wire jumper and his Synth-Linx 13 pin connectors. He knows his stuff and he's a whole lot of fun to work with. (Think Mad Max Kangaroo with guitar instead of gun)

I hope some of the information I've gathered can help others solve problems and build a great rig. I could never have put mine together without the patient advice, instruction, and humor of Elantric and many other members of the VGuitar forum. Thanks again for all your help everybody!

That would explain it although I prefer the insanity defense with the rugrat choir being the proximate cause.

Nah, I'm still waiting to hear how Steve and Pauls' FTP/GK3/(Antares ATG Internal kit) mods work out. In any case, I'm fresh out of inspiration and I haven't had a glimpse of my muse in months. I think she must've hitched a ride to the coast...

Vade - I know you are using the GeChic 13.3" HDMI display ($300
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PQDHAMW?psc=1

but i found a decent alternative at $125

Elecrow 12-Inch 1920X1080 HDMI DVI-D VGA PS3 PS4 WiiU Xbox360 1080P Display Monitor for Raspberry Pi 2B B+ Raspberry Pi 3B Windows 7 8 10

Ive been struggling to find an acceptable portable small video display for my MacMini (Mainstage)  rig

This 12" IPS full native 1920 x 1080 finally arrived and is very nice  - Legible and full 1920 x  1080

And it has built in Stereo Speakers on the back - this this is MUCH better than other small displays Ive tried

Its not a touch panel  - but it provides a solution for my live MacMini mainstage rig

@ "It's not a touch panel - but it provides a solution for my live MacMini mainstage rig"

That monitor looks like a good alternative if you've figured out an easy way to use your mouse with it on stage. My touch screen frees me from the mouse but using it with Sonar for recording and synth hosting is a bit problematic. To improve things I have found some software I like for home studio use which allows me to use my desktop mouse and keyboard seamlessly with my pedal board PC.

Edit: My GeChic is actually a different model...

Looks like a good solution as it leaves you the option to tuck your MacMini safely out of sight rather than having an expensive laptop exposed. Nice little keyboard there as well.

They've been going in and out of style. But they're guaranteed to raise a smile.

'"Now And Then" (also known as "I Don't Want To Lose You" or "Miss You") is the name given to an unreleased composition by John Lennon. It was first recorded in demo form in 1978 and was considered in 1995 as a third possible reunion single by Lennon's former band, The Beatles, for their 1995 autobiographical project The Beatles Anthology. Lennon wrote "Now And Then" in the late 1970s, around the same time as "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love". He recorded the unfinished piece of music in a demo form at his home at the Dakota Building, New York City, around 1979. The lyrics are typical of the apologetic love songs that Lennon wrote in the later half of his career. Despite reports, for the most part the verses are nearly complete, though there are still a few lines that Lennon did not flesh out on the demo tape performance.'

On modding a Fishman Triple Play (FTP) Stratocaster to feed a Roland GK3

The FTP Stratocaster has an FTP hex pickup next to the bridge. The hex pickup cable is routed through the guitar to the FTP PCB board and is soldered directly to the board. There is an associated connector. If you plug in an eight wire jumper to the FTP boards associated connector then the other end of the jumper can be inserted into the GK3 board where the Roland hex pickup cable is normally inserted. Thus the FTP pickup feeds the FTP board and the jumper feeds the GK3.

FTP hex pickup --> FTP PCB board --> Gk3 hex input

Gumbo might be kind enough to make you the simple 8 wire connector if you cross his palms with silver and ply his palate with ample amounts of grog.

So guitar masters...

I think I understand how Grace Potter creates tension by rising through octaves starting at 1:23 but I'm clueless as to what Satriani is doing at 5:08. Any thoughts?

My theory: he stomps on a Whammy 5 pedal or something similar just for that high note, stomping the pedal as his hands move up towards the bridge... then he plays an open string (now shifted up in pitch by the pedal) and pulls up on the whammy bar on his guitar to bend it up a whole tone and give it vibrato. The fretting hand has moved up near the bridge and he's using that hand's fingers etc to mute all strings except the open one.

That's my theory. The open string note would probably be a whole step lower, plus one or two octaves, to give him the whole step bending range.

BTW, you can do that nicely with a VG-99 on any note by setting the bend range so it only goes up 10 semitones instead of 12. Then use your hands or mechanical whammy to bend up to the octave. That gives you room above AND below the shifted pitch, for expressive stuff.

@ "The fretting hand has moved up near the bridge and he's using that hand's fingers etc to mute all strings except the open one."

Hey there Mooncaine. Thanks for taking the time to give it a bit of thought. I like your idea about the Whammy 5 pedal. It does seem like one possible way to get the tone shifted higher.

I'm not sure about the fretting hand being used to mute. It looks to me like he slides it down to use the index finger on the whammy bar while having the other fret hand fingers braced on the body of the guitar. His index and middle finger of his pick hand seem to be on either side of of the bars body for some reason. Possibly to set a baseline shift up and then do the range of the vibrato above that set point? I moved my hands to that position but didn't see any particular benefit to the technique in terms of gaining more control over the vibrato or freeing fingers for picking the sustained note. Unless someone comes up with a better explanation I'm leaning towards showmanship at the moment.

He might be pinching a harmonic with his right hand and working the wham with his left. It does look like he's muting the lower strings with his right as well. That's not too far from where you would do the Dimebag dive & squeal on the opposite end of the fretboard.
With Joe, there's always some showmanship thrown in for good measure.

Satriani is using a technique called "skill"
When using the bridge Mag PU and a lot of high gain distortion - there are a lot of high harmonics that can pop out within 6 inches of the bridge.

Joe is a master at this , and taught Steve Vai

Thanks for the tip HecticArt! Your Dimebag comment gave me some direction for my search and I found this YouTube. Satriani technique demonstarated at ~5:45. I'm still unsure what he's up to with the right index and middle fingers around the whammy bar (picture 5) but the technique is coming into focus.

I'm thinking that he's using the meat from his thumb or index finger to pinch the harmonic out of the string as he picks it. I think he just left his middle finger around the bar to hold it in place while he reached down to grab it with his left hand. For economy of motion, he just left the right hand fingers around bar.

I saw Joe a couple of times back in the day. Front row for one of the shows. I caught one of his guitar picks.
It didn't make me play like him though.......
