i just want to make sure i am seeing what i think i am seeing in the demo vids. does the gk-3 function as both a midi pickup and a magnetic pickup?  could the gk-3 be the only pickup a guitar has?

Welcome to the group jdredfield!  :)
The GK-3 is six magnetic pickups. The VG uses these to translate pitch to MIDI per string and also uses the audio to create the COSM, tuning, etc. features. Yes, you can have just the GK-3 in a guitar and use all the VG-99 features. I personally do not use the built in mag pickups in my guitar very much at all.

Welcome jdredfield
The GK3 has that short patch cord that goes from the GK3 to your guitar's mag pickups.   The GK3 also has a selector switch that blends both or selects either alone.  i don't use my guitar pick ups just the gk3.  you have to go into the VG99 to make this happen. I've checked it out before it's not very difficult.
