What I learned: if you hate the short, but audible, silence you have when switching patches, all you have to do is use ASSIGNS.

Ok, fine. I created a patch with all I need and I can activate/deactivate things, switch the amp on or off, and so on.
The problem is that the only usable pedal I can stomp on is the CTL.

I know that I can associate the assign with GK switch on the guitar, with the expression pedal and so on. But this is complicated because I am supposed to do similar things (switching things on and off) with different actions (press CTL for one thing, using a switch on the guitar for another, and so on).

I think that the only viable option to sort thing out is an external midi board. Even a simple one with 4 switches to send CCs, in order to associate each assign with a switch/CC.

Correct? Any other idea?

Cris.

I agree that is one possibility  :)

A different perspective to look at control, is not in terms of things 'on' or 'off', but blended through various states by variable control, like the sweep motion of the EXP pedal.
You can get many variations happening by using many Assigns, with the  Source mode set to 'moment' (variable) rather than 'toggle' (on/off), controlling effect depth or feedback rates, rather than the effect 'on' or 'off'.
The Assign parameters 'Act Range min' and 'Act Range max' will define the positions within the EXP pedal's travel
where the Assign varies from Target Min to Target Max.

There is a good DIY project on building a 12 button midi foot switch pedal, which includes direct effect control for the GR-55

Oh. I got a little.
You mean that I can assign different statuses to different positions of the exp pedal?
Any example?

My typical method is as follows, any settings that I set up for solo are activated using the toe switch on the exp pedal.  I calibrated the toe switch so that it is easily activated but no so easily that I get accidental activations.   I use the CTL pedal to activate or deactivate special things like going from guitar to sax, piano, harmonica etc. or switching from acoustic to electric or maybe from 6 string to 12 string.

This works for me as I have a different patch for each song which is again made easy by using an app called set list maker to pull up my patches automatically when I choose as song from within the app.

I am realizing now that I could probably get away with far less patches, in other words there are a number of songs that could use the same patch but I'm just to lazy at this point to go in and change it all.  That said if I find an existing patch that works with a new song that we pick up I may just assign it to the new song instead of creating a new patch.

Lastly in regards to setting up the exp pedal to have multiple sounds in different areas, I do this for my Deep Purple patches.  pedal all the way to the toe position is organ solo with no guitar, all the way to the heel position is guitar solo with no organ.  From the heel position if I rock the pedal forward slightly, I get rhythm guitar with little to no organ, as I rock the pedal forward it brings in the organ behind the rhythm guitar. The farther forward you rock the exp pedal the more organ you get.

It works really well since it's easy to landmark the two solo positions and it's surprisingly easy to find the rhythm tones that you are looking for by playing with the exp in the "in between" positions.
