I am having trouble getting the expression pedal to function with the Boss SY-300 Guitar Synthesizer unit.  I followed all the steps in this post (for example), regarding using the pedal as a volume pedal:  http://www.bossus.com/support/knowledge_base/205983405

But was unable to get it to work.  The literature is scant in the manual as far as a step by step process to get it working.  I'm using a Mission Engineering EP-1 pedal (confirmed compatible match with the Roland EV-5).  Any help would be much appreciated!

Have a tech check the Mission pedal

You must use a 1/4" TRS Cable

Rumor is the Mission EP-1 is missing the crucial "Ring" contact on the TRS cable connection required for Roland/Boss gear.

I'm also having trouble getting the SY-300 to respond to an expression pedal. I've tried both an EV-5 and an EHX 8step cv sequencer. Both pedals work perfectly with other units. Both units are connected with TRS.

So I'm wondering if there is some setting that I haven't picked up on that needs to be changed in order for the expression pedal to work. I assign the parameter to be controlled the same way I assign the control pedals, midi cc, or internal wave function( all of which function as you would expect ). The expression pedal is assigned to patch rather than global control. I'm stumped.

BBACH,

Post your problem SY-300 patch so others may help debug  your expression pedal assignment.

I'm presently away for the weekend, but will post next week, but the problem is on all patches.

Read SY-300 Parameter Guide - page 16 thru 20

if that makes no sense then Read  how all Boss multi-fx use Expression pedals with their requisite concept of control assignments and effects targets

Must use a TRS cable

"To use the FV-500H/L as an expression pedal, you will need an optional connection cable (stereo 1/4" TRS phone plugs at both ends)."

Thanks, this post made my day !

I didn't have the requested cable at home so used a stereo mini jack + 2 adapters :-)

Now, I can play with my new toy without having to shop for a stupid cable  8)

Interestingly, the FV500 works like a charm with a regular jack hooked to the Line 6 HX effects

Can't find a calibration for expression pedal on SY-300.
Is it hiding from me or isn't there one.
Mine is used primarily for FV and it's "leaking" a bit.
It's working with other units such as AD-10 and VG-99
It's an Boss ev-5

Correct - Like most Roland/Boss gear, the  Boss SY-300 must use an Expression pedal with a linear taper 10K pot ( Roland EV-5 compatible) only

and there is no External Pedal Calibration

I am having the same problem. Trs two different expression pedals 1 fender old generic and another boss fv 500L. Followed directions no luck. Wondering though someone on one of these mentioned using stereo phone plugs. Is this really what you are using those who are not having problems? Thanks

On FV-300-L ,

It will not work

must use a TRS cable with the FV-500-L or EV-5

I just watched a video on the ev-10 and it said the volume knob on the pedal has to be set to what you want then minimum to be so maybe this is also true for the FV-500H. I didn't buy it so I can't test now but I heard no change when using it. And the fender expression pedal isn't on the list in the link you sent so maybe I have just made both mistakes. I will try tomorrow to test the fV-500H with volume knob in mind. Fingers crossed

You will need to setup up some sort of control assign to use the pedal as it will not do much in the SY-300 "out of the box".
A stereo (TRS) cable is required between the FV-500 pedal (EXP Out) and the SY-300 EXP/CTRL input, a normal mono guitar patch cable will not work.

I have used a TRS cable not a guitar patch cable. And I followed the instructions to set the device to exp. Assign 1 target to output mixer and the and the parameter to synth volume. I also tried setting the mode to system or patch and neither made a difference. I will see if by chance I had the volume knob on 10 and maybe that was the problem. I will report back tomorrow.

the little knob on the side is for 'zeroing' the EXP pedal range, so no matter where it sits, the EXXP pedal should make some difference to your synth volume.
Is the assign actually enabled (switched on)?

yes assignment is on. I'm on my way in now we're I can test the volume pot on the side of the FV-500 and if that doesn't do it then there is likely something wrong with my sy300.

OK final conclusions: FV-500H does nothing unless it's set all the way to min. Even a smidgen off from that and the pedal does nothing. But I'm happy to say it is working with it set to min. Thanks for your help. Hope this helps others.

What I want to do with the expression pedal is to manipulate vst's in Reaper.  Am I able to do that?  I have not been successful yet.  I am using SY-300 with EV-5. I am also using Midi Guitar 2.

In the System/Midi/EXP settings,
setup a midi cc# number to send the exp pedal data on.
