Will the VG-99, 13-pin midi, work with an analog to digital converter (EX: Focustrite Saffire Pro 40 or similar interface),  with only 5-pin midi ins/outs?
Thanks, JR

A couple points for clarification

* Despite all the incorrect information out there, the Roland 13 pin connection is NOT MIDI !!! Its actually several analog unbalanced audio signals and a few control voltage lines. It must connect to an external  "Guitar to MIDI processor" to generate MIDI data.

* The VG-99 can be configured to become a "Guitar to MIDI processor" to generate MIDI Note on/off data - (its off by default). However,  the VG-99 does NOT respond to any external MIDI Note on/off commands - you will need a separate Synth, Audio engine, or Soft Synth on your computer like N.I. Kontact, or equivalent during DAW playback of the MIDI tracks recorded from the VG-99's Guitar to MIDI processor.

If you want to use your Saffire pro 40 as your Audio Interface for your DAW:

Its best to use balanced XLR-F to TRS cables or a pair of XLR cables  to connect the VG-99 Sub Outputs to a pair of TRS Line Inputs on the Saffire Pro - (Be sure these are set to "Line In" - not "Mic In") on the Saffire!), and monitor the Saffire Pro's Ouputs connected to Self powered Studio monitor speakers.

If you want to record Guitar to MIDI , then use one MIDI cable from the VG-99 MIDI Out, to the Saffire Pro's MIDI IN.

Use a Softsynth or external hardware synth connected to the  Saffire pro's MIDI Out to Hear the Guitar to MIDI data recorded in your DAW from the VG-99.
